Buzzing Through the IT Security Industry's Top 2012 Buzzwords

In the spirit of National Cyber Security Awareness month, Schwartz MSL recently analyzed five of the biggest ‘buzzwords’ in the IT security industry thrown around by industry analysts, vendors and journalists, including: Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), Cloud, IT Consumerization, Mobility and Virtualization. Specifically, we took a look at how many times these buzzwords were the focus of traditional news articles during the past 12 months.

And the Winner is…Mobility!! Over the last year, Mobility has been the focal point of articles more than 127,000 times.  There is no reason to believe this trend will change in 2013 because of the popularity of these devices at work, home and everywhere in between. 2013 could be the year we see dramatic increases in corporate attacks using the mobile device as the entry point.

Cloud ranked second with nearly 53 thousand articles over the past year. With the exception of a slight spike in May, Cloud has stayed fairly consistent throughout the past year averaging nearly four thousand articles a month. Cloud Security should become the focus of more articles in 2013.

The buzzword coming in third was Virtualization with more than 8,000 articles. In fourth place was BYOD with just over 4,000 articles and in a distant fifth place was IT Consumerization with more than 100 articles. There isn’t any question that Mobility, Cloud and Virtualization will be buzzing around the industry next year, but what other words are likely to replace BYOD and IT Consumerization?

Share your thoughts on hot buzzwords in 2013.
