Getting To Know
National Cybersecurity Awareness Month has come and gone, but hopefully the Schwartz Communications Security Practice's contribution of 31 posts in 31 days provided a fun, more personal glimpse into the lives of our industry peers ranging from journalists, industry analysts, company executives and Schwartz personnel. We hope you have enjoyed "Getting To Know" each of the participants and we encourage everyone to keep the conversation going.
Among the thirty-one security pros profiled, we learned quite a bit about their lives. Ranging from former collegiate athletes in crew, soccer and track & field to a childhood actor, certified woodworking teacher and even an atmospheric physicist, we certainly were not a loss for variety. We learned that we also have some musicians in the group, including those that played the trumpet and drums to those that strum the acoustic guitar and even the ukulele. We even have a Guitar Hero expert among us (if that counts).
When it comes to cuisine, favorites varied across the board. There were a handful of lobster and sushi lovers and those who have the sweet tooth in common, be it for strawberry shortcake, ice cream, chocolate and even Twizzlers! One person shared that he can grill a mean rack of ribs and in turn, we had someone who would be more than willing to eat them.
Of course there were some who trended toward the healthy side of things citing that they would prefer to partake in zucchini flowers or a "big ass salad". And it just wouldn't be the security industry if we didn't hear from those who enjoy spending time with friends over a couple of libations such as Jack-n-Coke or Ketel One and soda.
On the more serious side, we would be remiss if we didn't point out those who have taken their craft to the next level and have authored cybersecurity books such as Fatal System Error, Surviving Cyber War and Zero Day Threat.
And amazingly enough, a couple of our participants actually took the time to provide their profiles during major life events including the birth of a child and one from the morning of her wedding day!
Whatever path our lives and careers took to get here, we all seem to agree that what we like most about this amazing industry is the fast pace, the never-ending cat and mouse game that we are all engaged in against the bad guys and all of the incredibly smart people that we get to interface with on a day-in, day-out basis.
On behalf of the Schwartz Security Practice, thank you to all who participated and shared a little bit about themselves this past month. We all truly do make a difference out there and we look forward to working with you in the ongoing battle to keep computing environments and information as safe as possible.
We would like to conclude Schwartz's celebration of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month by sharing a quick video message from long-time security PR industry veteran and Schwartz Communications President Bryan Scanlon as he shares his thoughts on his nearly 20 years on the job...

Title: President
Company: Schwartz Communications
I first began working in security in: The early 90's, when I represented a host of networking providers bragging about secure networks.
What I like most about working in security is: We're contributing to the fight against the bad guys that are stealing identities and assaulting cyberspace and our national infrastructure.
My first Schwartz Security client was: AXENT, which was acquired by Symantec in the 90's and represented that consumer brand's first foray into the enterprise security market.
Favorite hobby: Building stuff, renovations, cooking, and lately, I'm back into photography.
Favorite food: I love food. All of it. (Have you seen me lately? It's obvious.) In the end, I would definitely pick anything my grandmother and grandfather cooked, and since moving to California, fish tacos.
In my "spare" time, I: Spend all of it with wonderful family. Intensive Wii competitions with Molly. A borderline ridiculous amount of rock concerts with Stacy. And playing with our two dogs. I am fairly certain the dogs hold more rights in our house than I do.
People would be most surprised to learn that I: Almost went to chef school, and only at the last minute decided to take up writing. Took a PR job because journalism wouldn't pay my student loans, never mind the rent. Now I can't imagine doing anything else.
You can find me at: Schwartz Communications,

Title: Director
Company: Schwartz Communications
I first began working in security in: 2001.
What I like most about working in security is: The dynamic nature of the industry. Attack methods are always evolving, and our clients are leading the way in tracking these threats and protecting businesses and consumers.
My first Schwartz Security client was: NTRU.
Favorite hobby: I'm an unapologetic film nut. You name it, I've seen it.and odds are good that I can tell you something good about even the worst movie.
Favorite food: Homemade lasagna. It pleases the inner Garfield in me.
In my "spare" time, I: Wish I had more spare time.
People would be most surprised to learn that I: Once enjoyed a leisurely one-on-one breakfast with Julia Child during my time working in television and narrowly avoided crashing my car with Jacques Pepin in it during the same day.
You can find me at: Schwartz Communications, @dbowker or via LinkedIn.

Title: Analyst & President
Company: Securosis
I first began working in/covering security in: 1995.
What I like most about working in security is: Nothing. What's to like? We are a bunch of grumpy, cynical folks that don't get along real well with anyone. That's why we do security, right? Actually security is a very hard job. On a good day, nothing happens. It's like living in Bizarro-World. So my role is to try to make life easier for everyday security folks. Either by putting together a methodology for security programs (http://www.pragmaticcso.com) or doing research into how to more effectively protect information. I like it most when folks tell me what I do is valuable. Not for my ego (OK, maybe a bit for my ego), but more from the perspective that I'm making their lives easier.
Other than myself or colleagues, my "must read" security industry influencer is: Brian Krebs. He does the work and understands the bad guys. I learn a lot from every project he does. I'd also say Richard Bejtlich, who's had a huge impact on how I view network security and incident response. Finally, from a company standpoint, I'd highlight the Mandiant blog. Most corporate blogs are the suXor. But the Mandiant guys go deep and you know they are knee deep in the latest attacks, so I always spend a bunch of time trying to get my simpleton brain around their work.
Favorite hobby: It varies. Now it's exercise. I'm sure at some point it'll change. But working out is keeping me occupied right now. I'm also a crazy football fan. So don't mess with me on Sunday afternoons.
Favorite food: It's pretty boring, but a big ass salad. I get grumpy if I don't have my veggies every day. I stopped eating meat about 2.5 years ago, so chicken wings were taken off the list.
In my "spare" time, I: Do whatever the Boss (my wife) tells me to do. Mostly it's being present with my family as a husband and father. But I don't have much spare time, which is just the way I like it.
People would be most surprised to learn that I: Love modern art. If someone dropped a bag of money in my lap, I wouldn't buy a new house or a fancy car. I'd have a lot of really cool art.
You can find me at: Securosis, @securityincite.

Title: Deputy Editor
Company: SC Magazine
I first began working in/covering security in: January 2006, when I joined SC Magazine as a reporter. I’ve since climbed the ladder to deputy editor. I decided to take the job because I enjoyed covering the cop beat in my previous role as a reporter at the Asbury Park Press newspaper in New Jersey. I figured, how much different can it be writing about hackers and malware writers than murderers and rapists? Quite a bit, actually. But the same criminal elements apply.
What I like most about working in security is: That it’s hot. Everyone relies on information security, whether they realize it or not, on an almost minute-by-minute basis, to protect their data and identities.
Other than myself or colleagues, my "must read" security industry influencer is: That’s a tough one. I like how Bruce Schneier does a nice job of downplaying the FUD (fear, uncertainty and doubt) and putting the problems facing the industry in perspective. But there are so many smart people out there, from the researchers discovering mind-blowing stuff to the CISOs doing some really leading-edge stuff in their organizations to the law enforcement specialists who recognize the degree to which cybercrime has become an epidemic to the product marketing teams and PR pros who have the important job of relaying the issues around security in clear ways that everyone can understand. But, if you really want to know, I’d guess I’d point you to my Twitter account to see who I follow. Though I’m sure that’s a very incomplete list.
Favorite hobby: Playing fantasy sports. I love stats. If I were smart enough, I’d be writing about sabermetrics.
Favorite food: A delicious porterhouse steak, some fresh veggies and a Ketel One and soda.
In my "spare" time, I: Drink with buddies, play fantasy sports, write Facebook status updates, work out, and try to take advantage of all the cool things the greatest city in the world – that being New York, of course – has to offer.
People would be most surprised to learn that I: Am fiercely liberal and progressive. Actually, they may not be if they follow me on Twitter. I have what I believe are very rational and informed beliefs on the state of this country. But I worry that we are becoming a declining empire, one which is empowering the rich and closing out the middle class. And I’m a journalist, so you know I ain’t rich! But I love what I do. And I’m lucky. Not everyone can say that about their jobs.
You can find me at: SC Magazine, @dankaps or via LinkedIn.

Name: Jim Geary
Title: President and CEO
Company: Invincea
I first began working in security in: January of 1990. Back then most security evolved around mainframes. There was no AV, firewall or internet security market. We were initially trying to solve user identification dial-up problems into telephone switches.
What I like most about working in security is: Every day there’s a different challenge. Some potentially significant challenges are from attackers, while other challenges come from vendors!
Other than my colleagues, the security industry influencer whose work or contribution to the market that I most admire is: Jim Bidzos. Jim is a great marketer, and did an amazing job of creating a larger than reality brand around RSA (prior to the acquisition by Security Dynamics and then EMC). Jim was also the driver behind VeriSign.
Favorite hobby: Learning about human behavior. There is still so much to learn in so many different areas. Lots of new case studies every day!
Favorite food: Fresh seafood…anywhere, anytime! Breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner, late-night, now!
In my "spare" time, I: Enjoy football, boating, football, golf and football. Did I mention I like football?
People would be most surprised to learn that I: Am a certified woodworking teacher!

Favorite hobby: Walking down to the harbor with my wife.
Favorite food: Sushi.
In my "spare" time, I: Read history and sci-fi, root for the Yankees.
People would be most surprised to learn that I: Drove a cab in Manhattan.

Name: Byron Acohido
Title: Technology Reporter
Company: USA Today, The Last Watchdog
I first began working in/covering security in: August 2004, when the MSblast worm hit Windows. I wrote the breaking news story for USA TODAY and got intrigued. I went on to direct and execute cybercrime coverage for USA TODAY that to date includes hundreds of news stories and blogposts and dozens of investigative cover stories. I was the lead author of an independently produced non-fiction cybercrime thriller describing how -- and why -- the cyberunderground took shape from 1999 through 2007. That book, Zero Day Threat: Zero Day Threat: The Shocking Truth of How Banks and Credit Bureaus Help Cyber Crooks Steal Your Money and Identity, won the prestigious Excellence in Financial Journalism Award for general audience books from the New York State Society of Certified Public Accounts. I'm presently working solo on the sequel, Pandora's Web, which will recount the rapid maturation of the cybercrime from 2008 to present.
What I like most about working in security is: The rapid evolution of cybercrime is a rich, complex topic with profound ramifications that touch us all. Journalism extracts core truths about complex issues and conveys these truths cogently. As an old-school watchdog journalist, I find great satisfaction in shedding useful light on this topic. Hopefully, my readers come away enlightened, appreciative, perhaps even spurred to take action.
Other than myself or colleagues, my "must read" security industry influencer is: Hands down Brian Krebs. Krebs deserved a Pulitzer for his McColo exposé, a textbook example of watchdog journalism having an immediate and profound positive impact. And he's kept it up with his work on the Russian Business Network, Stuxnet and other milestone developments.
Favorite hobby: SUPing -- Stand Up Paddling; also outrigger canoe paddling and old-school, old-man surfing.
Favorite food: Pineapple.
In my "spare" time, I: Get in the water as much as I can; play the ukulele; cook; volunteer with youth.
People would be most surprised to learn that I: Have had the privilege of being a full-time working journalist since three days after graduating from the University of Oregon School of Journalism in March 1977. Yes, that long ago.
You can find me at: USA Today, The Last Watchdog, @lastwatchdog, and via LinkedIn.

Name: Eric Ogren
Title: Principal Analyst
Company: Ogren Group
I first began working in/covering security in: Wow! I started security in 1993 as the first Product Line Manager for what is now RSA Security. My first impression was showing up for an interview, with Claire the receptionist greeting me from behind bullet-proof glass. Security has come a long way since then…
What I like most about working in security is: The challenges are constantly evolving, and there are a lot of up and coming young companies with interesting ideas.
Other than myself or colleagues, my "must read" security industry influencer is: Honestly, I like to form my own views and seldom read other people’s musings. I do find Andrew Jacquith to be one of the more interesting security analysts to talk with.
Favorite hobby: I’m a Libra so I’m entitled to two vices - golf in the summer and curling in the winter. I’m not real good in either sport, but I have a lot of fun!
Favorite food: Does anything beat a handful of Twizzlers?
In my "spare" time, I: I wish I had something interesting to say here, but I’m more than boring in my spare time. The truth is I like to read a lot, with anything written by Daniel Silva, Greg Iles, or John Sandford keeping me up well past bed time. If I don’t have a good book, then I satisfy my adult ADD with hours of mindless browsing while my wife watches fashion and home shows.
People would be most surprised to learn that I: Actually liked the last Project Runway episode (Note: Eric wrote this on 8/31). Man, is Gretchen is a supremely confident designer who unfortunately screwed up Team Luxe! If someone ever meets me and my collection of clothes that should’ve been recycled years ago, they would be surprised I even know what Project Runway is.

Name: Illena Armstrong
Title: Editor-in-Chief
Company: SC Magazine
I first began working in/covering security in: Geez, man… more years than I care to admit, really. Let’s just say about 10.
What I like most about working in security is: The information security space is full of intellectually stimulating happenings that change all the time, so everyday is different. Plus, I like multitasking, facing new and interesting challenges, meeting and greeting people, learning something new as often as possible, and devising new ways to educate and interact with our loyal readers. In my current role, I get to do all this and more on a day-to-day basis… it’s not the typical desk job for a journalist.
Other than myself or colleagues, my "must read" security industry influencer is: This is a tough one. I check out a lot of people’s stuff, so it’s hard to pick. I suppose top of mind would be folks like Gary Warner or Mikko Hypponen. Also, Randy Vickers and his team obviously are on top of the latest threats and risks – technical and non-technical. But, I stress: there are bunches of industry folks and information sites to keep a very frequent eye on.
Favorite hobby: I don’t know if I have one that tops them all. I like to travel as far and as often as time permits. I enjoy digging in the dirt, helping a cottage garden grow. Being outside as frequently as possible is a must, whether hiking some trails, running (which I just started getting back into), hitting the beach (preferably a sunny, warm, rock-less one, so a non-New England location, if available), snowboarding. And some time soon, I want to get back into horseback riding. The to-do list of fun runs on and on.
Favorite food: Besides any bit of decadent, chocolate goodness that I can get my hands on (chocolate is, after all, the foundation of my personal food pyramid), I can’t get enough Vodka Pasta.
In my "spare" time, I: Spare time here and there means, in my mind, time to chill, so I might opt for quiet time by reading or seeing a movie at the Cinema Pub. I also blow off steam by checking out some good concerts or hitting a local joint to play video games armed with Blue Moon. Nothing like taking out some hungry zombies or man-eating velociraptors to relax a chick…
People would be most surprised to learn that I: See a Ducati in my future (maybe a zippy and very red Streetfighter one of these days) and I daydream about becoming a roller derby jammer, which could happen if I could just keep a more regular work schedule! Texas flat-track teams especially rock – hard-core scorers. I need to come up with a cool derby name for my alter ego…maybe Scara Impaling or Wailing Jennies?

Title: Senior Account Executive
Company: Schwartz Communications
I first began working in security in: 2007.
What I like most about working in security is: I’m always learning something new because there are so many evolving threats and new technologies. I’m constantly scanning headlines for breaking news and figuring out ways to work my clients into those stories. There’s a real rush in pitching breaking news with same-day coverage.
My first Schwartz Security client was: Aveksa.
Favorite hobby: Rock climbing, rowing and reading.
Favorite food: Anything seafood – especially lobster!
In my "spare" time, I: Spend time with my fiancé (Mike), hang out with friends, workout, explore the city, try new restaurants and read.
People would be most surprised to learn that I: Was born in Nebraska and have also lived in Puerto Rico, Michigan, California, Virginia, Florida and now Massachusetts. Also, I am very afraid of sharks. I know my chances of being struck by lightning are greater than getting attacked by a shark, but both of my parents have been struck by lightning...

Title: Vice President of Research
Company: Damballa
I first began working in security in: “Working” in security could be open to interpretation I guess. In the early 1980’s I was reverse engineering software and developing infinite-live cheat modules for games and subsequently selling them at school. By the mid 1980’s I had built and run multiple Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) and was working diligently to patch security bugs and combat dial-in cheaters. As the 1990’s kicked-in, the IT consulting phase of my career began with an escalating emphasis on securing network infrastructure.
What I like most about working in security is: I love the diversity and dynamic nature of IT security. The way in which the threats evolve each month, how the cyber-criminals organize and rally their attack infrastructure, and the pace of technological change – they’re all aspects of security that manage to keep me on my toes and constantly learning new things. You don’t have the opportunity to become bored!
Other than my colleagues, the security industry influencer whose work or contribution to the market that I most admire is: I’m not sure there’s any particular industry influencer I’d single out for admiration. There’s a collective and collaborative effort in constructing great security – with many of the significant contributors deliberately seeking to remain anonymous. Having said that, there are a couple of vocal security folks who I have a lot of respect for – Robert Graham and Bruce Schneier. They both go out of their way to make technical security concepts understandable to the layman – honing in on the core concepts and stripping away the sensationalism.
Favorite hobby: Reading junk SciFi novels and space opera.
Favorite food: Indonesian – Bami Goreng (extra hot).
In my "spare" time, I: Spare time? In the security world there’s no such thing as spare time. If I’m lucky, I get a few hours between flights to examine parts of the city I’m presenting in.
People would be most surprised to learn that I: Most people would be surprised to learn that I’m an atmospheric physicist with meteorological tendencies. Apparently it’s turned out pretty useful in being able to predict the next cyber-storm.

Title: Editorial Director of Security Media
Company: TechTarget
I first began working in/covering security in: October 2000 with SearchSecurity.com as News Editor.
What I like most about working in security is: Every day there’s a new story, a new attack, a new technology to write about and learn about. We forget that we’re still in the relatively early days of the security industry and that’s a pretty cool thing to observe how quickly it changes and how the market reacts to everything from new threats to new regulations. Plus the people are fascinating. I think the researcher types are some of the smartest people out there and it’s always fun to talk to them and listen to them explain and teach what they love to do. These people truly think differently in their approaches to problem solving, and it’s cool to know some of them and write about what they do.
Other than myself or colleagues, my "must read" security industry influencer is: Chris Hoff; Dan Geer; Marcus Ranum.
Favorite hobby: Shooting hoops; training my chocolate lab to be a better citizen.
Favorite food: Ice cream (is that food?); burgers (a close second).
In my "spare" time, I: Coach my kids’ soccer teams; chase my dog around.
People would be most surprised to learn that I: Am not as quiet as they think!

My first Schwartz Security client was: Breach Security.

Favorite food: Kung Po Prawns.
In my "spare" time, I: Try to write short fiction and go out and meet friends.

What I like most about working in security is: The constant need to be “on your toes.” The possibility of breaking news could come at any time, and I love the thrill of getting clients to respond quickly. I also enjoy reading industry news since I can be up-to-date on the latest events.
My first Schwartz Security client was: AirDefense (acquired by Motorola in 2008).
Favorite hobby: Running (I’m currently training for a Half Marathon), reading, scrapbooking and watching comedies (I love to laugh).
Favorite food: Either lasagna or chicken pad thai.
In my "spare" time, I: Spend time with my hubby Marshall, hang out with my two sisters and when I can, I love to go into Boston to wander around (I admit I don’t do this as much as I’d like to).
People would be most surprised to learn that I: Love Guitar Hero and play at the “expert” setting. Although I have seemingly mastered the guitar, I’m still getting acquainted with the drums in Guitar Hero World Tour. People would also be surprised to learn that I played the role of Velma Kelly from the musical Chicago in Bentley’s production of “Bentley Gone Broadway.” I also played rugby while in college—played both flanker and lock (i.e. was in the scrum)—but was forced to stop due to a shoulder injury.

Title: Security Editor
Company: The Tech Herald
I first began working in/covering security in: I started covering security news and topics in 2006. I was originally the IT operations person for Monsters and Critics, the parent of TTH. One day, the boss mentioned that there was an opening in the tech section, and wanted to know if I knew anyone. I jumped at it; given that I have worked in IT and security most of my adult life I knew the material. After a few trial stories and a few hiccups, I got the job. I've been doing it since. In 2008, we launched The Tech Herald, with the other staff from the Tech section on Monsters and Critics.
What I like most about working in security is: I like learning and research the most. Part of my job is to learn the material that I report on. I'm not an expert by any stretch, but I love the thrill of learning something new or solving a puzzle. There have been many stories that started as something small but got bigger as I kept digging. When that happens, it's a rush of sorts, it's hard to describe really. After that, I like the people I meet. Other reporters, security experts, CEOs, researchers, each offer something unique, and bring a lot to the table. The security world has a lot of wonderful and scary smart people in it, something I'm proud to be associated with.
Other than myself or colleagues, my "must read" security industry influencer is: Since I can't list other reporters, the fist thought in my head is the staff at Securosis. They post tons of good stuff on their blog. Then there is Layer8, epic stuff there. Actually, IT Security Geek as a whole is pretty awesome.
Favorite hobby: I love to read. I have more books than I should.
Favorite food: Italian and Asian.
In my "spare" time, I: Play Xbox with my boys (Nazi Zombies, Dragon Age, Gears of War), read, code, and lurk on a few forums here an there.
People would be most surprised to learn that I: Played trumpet and drums in band.
You can find me at: The Tech Herald, @SteveD3.

Title: CTO
Company: Lancope
I first began working in security in: As a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps in 1998. I was stationed at Beaufort Air Station in Beaufort, SC (very close to the infamous Paris Island). The entire air station was managed by a handful of IT personnel, all of whom had the task of managing both the network as well as the primitive proxy-based session firewalls of the time. The biggest threats we had to deal with were viruses that made their way onto the base through floppy disk drives. My how times have changed!
What I like most about working in security is: The ever changing landscape of security technologies. There is very little room for boredom in network security technology. If you find yourself bored it's probably because you're overlooking something critical – this is the time attackers have the greatest advantage.
Other than my colleagues, the security industry influencer whose work or contribution to the market that I most admire is: Palo Alto's Zir Nuk. His career and successes as a security vendor executive and thought leader are among the industries best.
Favorite hobby: Gaming. Specifically any large scale MMO (massively multiplayer online) game such as World of Warcraft. I'm also a huge fan of brainy technical games such as Sid Meier's Civilization series.
Favorite food: Ribs and all things Barbecue.
In my "spare" time, I: Spend nearly 100% of my time with my wife and two boys, Taylor and Grayson.
People would be most surprised to learn that I: Am actually not related to Austin Powers and don't know anyone named "Eve". Go figure!

Title: Analyst & CEO
Company: Securosis
I first began working in/covering security in: 1989 when I started working security at University of Colorado football games and concerts.
What I like most about working in security is: It's never boring. It's an entirely reactive business where we have to protect new stuff the business comes up with against new threats the bad guys devise. Besides, it's *way* cooler than working in storage.
Other than myself or colleagues, my "must read" security industry influencer is: Richard Beitlich. I'm not sure there is any other blogger/writer who is actively dealing with the kind of scope Richard is responsible for on a daily basis.
Favorite hobby: Outdoor sports.
Favorite food: Mexican.
In my "spare" time, I: Run, ride, swim, hike and all the outdoor sports stuff (plus some martial arts when I'm not broken too badly).
People would be most surprised to learn that I: My wife just had a new kid and I'm going to make Tim buy me a drink to make up for answering this while on paternity leave.
